After posting September-quarter results on 19 October 2026, UltraTech Cement's finance chief Atul Daga warned that petcoke and industrial diesel prices remain volatile while the Middle East conflict drags on, squeezing margins even as volumes grow and leaving smaller cement rivals with less room to absorb the same fuel bill.

On 19 October 2026, UltraTech Cement Ltd, India's largest cement producer, reported September-quarter earnings and hosted an analyst call dominated by fuel anxiety. Chief financial officer Atul Daga said petcoke prices had shot through the roof and industrial diesel, used in mining and trucking, sits at an all-time high after repeated government increases. He joked that predicting the West Asia crisis outcome is harder than rolling dice, after the company had hoped crude would ease last quarter. Consolidated net profit attributable to shareholders rose about 21% year on year to roughly ₹1,493.8 crore, but that fell short of a Bloomberg poll near ₹1,604 crore because freight and raw materials also inflated. Volumes grew on a weak monsoon that kept sites active longer than usual, yet margin pressure persisted. Shares closed about 2.4% lower on the day while the Nifty fell roughly 1.1%.
Cement kilns burn petcoke and coal to reach clinker temperatures, then move tonnes by diesel trucks. When war risk keeps global fuel elevated, the cost hits before builders renegotiate project budgets. UltraTech's scale lets it mix imports, petcoke, and alternative fuels and push price increases with a lag. Regional players with thinner balance sheets feel the same diesel and petcoke invoices without the same pricing power, which is why Daga said the industry's smaller names face a tougher absorption problem. Housing demand can stay firm while profits wobble if input inflation outruns announced cement price hikes.
If you are building or buying a home, watch whether local dealers raise cement bags again after this cost spike, especially outside metro markets where logistics matter. Contractors should lock quotes quickly when diesel surcharges move. Investors in mid-cap cement names should stress-test margins against petcoke rather than only volume growth. Track weekly petcoke import prices, government diesel revisions, and whether UltraTech and peers announce another round of cement price increases into the festive construction season.
Trade policy / exports
Commerce minister Piyush Goyal said on 22 October 2026 that India’s proposed free-trade agreement with the European Union could become operational within four to five months after signing, with the deal expected to be inked before year-end during his visit to Germany.
Food delivery / quick commerce
Swiggy reported on 22 October 2026 that September-quarter revenue rose 36% to about ₹7,571 crore and the consolidated net loss narrowed to ₹922 crore, as food delivery posted record adjusted core profit of about ₹349 crore while quick-commerce Instamart lost about ₹764 crore at the segment level amid heavier discounting and 69 new dark stores.
Quick-service restaurants / consumers
KFC and Pizza Hut operator Sapphire Foods India said on 22 October 2026 that September-quarter consolidated restaurant sales rose 20% year on year to about ₹885 crore, with KFC India same-store sales up 14% and adjusted EBITDA margin expanding 100 basis points to 7.1% even as the listed stock remained far below its 52-week high.
RBI / government borrowing
On 22 October 2026, the Reserve Bank of India accepted no bids at the scheduled sale of short-dated government treasury bills, the first full cancellation in about seven months, as investors demanded higher yields amid a bond selloff, oil-linked inflation fears, and expectations of more rate hikes after October’s policy minutes.
