On 14 October 2026, India’s six- and twelve-month treasury bill auctions cleared at yields about 20 basis points above the prior week, pushing the spread over the 5.5% repo rate to a four-year high as markets priced tighter policy after hawkish RBI comments.

On 14 October 2026, the Indian government’s weekly treasury bill auction drew much steeper yields than traders were used to just a few months ago. The 182-day bill cleared at 6.29% and the 364-day bill at 6.49%, each up more than 20 basis points from the previous week and at roughly an 18-month high for those maturities. Because the Reserve Bank of India’s policy repo rate sits at 5.5% after an October hike, the extra yield investors demanded over the policy rate rose to 79 basis points on six-month bills and 99 basis points on one-year bills. That spread is the widest since November 2022. Reporting tied the move to governor Sanjay Malhotra’s 13 October comments that monetary policy and financial stability cannot be fully separated, on top of September inflation prints that traders think could force another hike by December.
Treasury bills are how the government rolls short-term borrowing; when cut-off yields jump, every ministry and state-owned firm that funds itself in the money market pays more. The same day, the Small Industries Development Bank of India reportedly placed three-year and shorter bonds at coupons above 8%, a level Reuters said was rare in the last decade for the lender. Higher front-end yields usually flow into bank fixed deposits, commercial paper, and eventually retail loan rates, even before the RBI moves again. Bond traders were also selling longer maturities, with the 10-year yield touching about 7.40% on 14 October, so the curve is flattening as investors demand compensation for both near-term hikes and currency defence measures.
If you rely on fixed deposits or short-term debt funds, compare new offers against what you locked in before the October repo hike. Companies rolling working-capital loans should expect banks to quote wider spreads over T-bill benchmarks. Home buyers on floating rates should watch overnight indexed swap levels, not just the RBI’s last decision. None of this guarantees a December hike, but the auction result shows money markets are already charging for one.
Trade policy / exports
Commerce minister Piyush Goyal said on 22 October 2026 that India’s proposed free-trade agreement with the European Union could become operational within four to five months after signing, with the deal expected to be inked before year-end during his visit to Germany.
Food delivery / quick commerce
Swiggy reported on 22 October 2026 that September-quarter revenue rose 36% to about ₹7,571 crore and the consolidated net loss narrowed to ₹922 crore, as food delivery posted record adjusted core profit of about ₹349 crore while quick-commerce Instamart lost about ₹764 crore at the segment level amid heavier discounting and 69 new dark stores.
Quick-service restaurants / consumers
KFC and Pizza Hut operator Sapphire Foods India said on 22 October 2026 that September-quarter consolidated restaurant sales rose 20% year on year to about ₹885 crore, with KFC India same-store sales up 14% and adjusted EBITDA margin expanding 100 basis points to 7.1% even as the listed stock remained far below its 52-week high.
RBI / government borrowing
On 22 October 2026, the Reserve Bank of India accepted no bids at the scheduled sale of short-dated government treasury bills, the first full cancellation in about seven months, as investors demanded higher yields amid a bond selloff, oil-linked inflation fears, and expectations of more rate hikes after October’s policy minutes.
