On 14 October 2026, the Supreme Court directed Indian Railways to bundle travel insurance with every ticket sold at station counters from 27 October, extending a cover that until now applied mainly to online IRCTC bookings.

On 14 October 2026, the Supreme Court of India told Indian Railways that every train ticket sold at physical reservation counters must include travel insurance starting 27 October 2026. Wire reports said the bench acted on a public-interest petition arguing that passengers who buy tickets offline were not offered the same accident cover that online buyers could tick on the IRCTC website. Until now, insurance on train travel was largely opt-in for digital bookings. The court’s order makes the premium part of the ticket price for counter sales as well.
Rail travel still carries injury risk in derailments or accidents, and ticket prices are low enough that many families buy at counters without smartphones. Bundling insurance shifts the default from uncovered to covered, with the premium likely embedded in the fare or shown as a separate line on the receipt. Railways will need to negotiate or renew policies with insurers, train counter staff on the new rule, and update printing systems before the deadline. For insurers, mandatory attachment at counters opens a high-volume, low-ticket channel similar to micro-insurance on bus tickets.
If you usually queue at the station, check your receipt after 27 October for the insurance clause and keep the policy number handy when you travel. If you book online, compare whether counter and app tickets now carry the same cover and cost. Policy watchers should watch whether the Railways Board publishes tariff circulars on premium amounts and whether parliament or IRDAI sets caps on commission for these bundled products.
Trade policy / exports
Commerce minister Piyush Goyal said on 22 October 2026 that India’s proposed free-trade agreement with the European Union could become operational within four to five months after signing, with the deal expected to be inked before year-end during his visit to Germany.
Food delivery / quick commerce
Swiggy reported on 22 October 2026 that September-quarter revenue rose 36% to about ₹7,571 crore and the consolidated net loss narrowed to ₹922 crore, as food delivery posted record adjusted core profit of about ₹349 crore while quick-commerce Instamart lost about ₹764 crore at the segment level amid heavier discounting and 69 new dark stores.
Quick-service restaurants / consumers
KFC and Pizza Hut operator Sapphire Foods India said on 22 October 2026 that September-quarter consolidated restaurant sales rose 20% year on year to about ₹885 crore, with KFC India same-store sales up 14% and adjusted EBITDA margin expanding 100 basis points to 7.1% even as the listed stock remained far below its 52-week high.
RBI / government borrowing
On 22 October 2026, the Reserve Bank of India accepted no bids at the scheduled sale of short-dated government treasury bills, the first full cancellation in about seven months, as investors demanded higher yields amid a bond selloff, oil-linked inflation fears, and expectations of more rate hikes after October’s policy minutes.
