IRDAI data released on 9 October 2026 show first-year premium at ₹2.46 lakh crore in April–September FY26, up 20.6% year on year. September collections alone rose 21.3% to ₹48,781 crore.

On 9 October 2026, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India published industry statistics for the six months to September 2026. First-year premium across life insurers reached ₹2.46 lakh crore, up 20.6% from ₹2.04 lakh crore in the same period of FY25. Growth came from both regular premium plans and group single-premium business. In September alone, new premium collections hit ₹48,781 crore, a 21.3% increase from ₹40,207 crore in September 2025. Life Insurance Corporation of India still leads the market, with its first-year premium up 19.3% to roughly ₹1.44 lakh crore.
Life insurance is a long-cycle product: you are measuring fresh sales, not renewals alone. A fifth straight year of strong first-year growth suggests households are still committing to protection and savings wrappers, even as regulators debate lower distribution pay. The LIC share shows the state giant is participating in the expansion, not losing all the momentum to private rivals. This print sits in the same week as highway toll gains, festive travel, and electric three-wheeler sales, another signal that large ticket household decisions are still moving.
If you are shopping for term or endowment cover, compare benefits and charges, not just the premium quote. Rising industry sales do not guarantee the best deal for you. If you track financials, pair this industry data with individual insurer results for value of new business and persistency. Watch whether proposed commission caps slow new business growth from late 2027 onward.
Trade policy / exports
Commerce minister Piyush Goyal said on 22 October 2026 that India’s proposed free-trade agreement with the European Union could become operational within four to five months after signing, with the deal expected to be inked before year-end during his visit to Germany.
Food delivery / quick commerce
Swiggy reported on 22 October 2026 that September-quarter revenue rose 36% to about ₹7,571 crore and the consolidated net loss narrowed to ₹922 crore, as food delivery posted record adjusted core profit of about ₹349 crore while quick-commerce Instamart lost about ₹764 crore at the segment level amid heavier discounting and 69 new dark stores.
Quick-service restaurants / consumers
KFC and Pizza Hut operator Sapphire Foods India said on 22 October 2026 that September-quarter consolidated restaurant sales rose 20% year on year to about ₹885 crore, with KFC India same-store sales up 14% and adjusted EBITDA margin expanding 100 basis points to 7.1% even as the listed stock remained far below its 52-week high.
RBI / government borrowing
On 22 October 2026, the Reserve Bank of India accepted no bids at the scheduled sale of short-dated government treasury bills, the first full cancellation in about seven months, as investors demanded higher yields amid a bond selloff, oil-linked inflation fears, and expectations of more rate hikes after October’s policy minutes.
